Still lying in the granite bedrock where it was abandoned 3,500 years ago, the Unfinished Obelisk of Aswan would have been the largest obelisk ever erected — 42 metres tall and weighing over 1,200 tonnes. A crack in the granite during cutting caused it to be left in place, creating one of archaeology's most instructive accidents: a perfect window into the methods and tools the ancient Egyptians used to quarry their colossal monuments.
