Lahun Pyramid questions before you go

Direct answers for travelers comparing access, timing, interior conditions and a wider Fayoum pyramid route.

Who built the Lahun Pyramid?

Pharaoh Senusret II built the pyramid during Egypt’s 12th Dynasty, around the late 19th century BCE, as the center of his royal funerary complex at the entrance to Fayoum.

What makes the Lahun Pyramid unusual?

Its builders incorporated a natural limestone knoll, reinforced the core with cross-shaped stone walls and mud brick, and concealed the entrance south of the pyramid instead of using the traditional north face.

Can visitors enter the Lahun Pyramid?

Interior access has been available at different times, but openings can change for conservation, safety or official reasons. Confirm access and any separate ticket shortly before visiting.

How long should I spend at Lahun?

Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours for the pyramid complex and archaeological landscape. Add more time if you are visiting Hawara, Meidum or other Fayoum sites.

Where is the Lahun Pyramid?

The pyramid stands near El Lahun in Fayoum Governorate, roughly 22 kilometres southeast of Medinet El-Fayoum and around 100 kilometres southwest of Cairo.

What should I bring for the interior?

Bring sturdy closed shoes, water, sun protection and a phone light or small torch. Interior passages can be steep, narrow and unsuitable for visitors with mobility or claustrophobia concerns.

What was Kahun?

Kahun is the modern archaeological name for the planned town near the pyramid, ancient Hetep-Senusret, where priests, administrators and workers supported the royal funerary cult.

Can Lahun be combined with Hawara and Meidum?

Yes. Lahun and Hawara form a strong Middle Kingdom route, while Meidum adds an earlier stage of pyramid development. A private vehicle makes the dispersed circuit practical.
