Quick Heritage Answer
Why is Mostorod important on Egypt’s Holy Family Trail?
According to the supplied Coptic tradition, Mostorod sheltered the Holy Family twice: first during the journey south into Egypt and again on the return journey north. The site is traditionally called Al-Mahamma, “The Bathing Place,” because the Virgin Mary is said to have bathed the infant Jesus and washed His clothes using water from the sacred spring.
The sanctuary combines a living pilgrimage tradition with a subterranean cave crypt, the Holy Well, a medieval basilican church, historic columns and Coptic icons. For route planning, Mostorod connects naturally with Mary’s Tree in Matariya and Coptic Cairo.
