What makes Lake Qarun special?
The lake combines natural history, seasonal birdlife and human settlement. Around its shores, visitors can connect Tunis Village craft traditions with Qasr Qarun, ancient Karanis and the wider archaeological landscape of the Fayoum Depression.
Lake Qarun is a protected nature reserve and a remnant of the much larger ancient lake system. Its salinity and ecology have changed over time, and current restoration work makes responsible tourism especially important.
